Give Your Home and Garden a New Lease of Life

Hello, my name is Iggy and I live in Perth, Australia. Last month, I was out in my garden enjoying the sunshine when I noticed that there was something strange on my roof. I climbed up onto the roof of my home and discovered some damage. While I was up on the roof, I took a long look down at my garden. Seeing it from such a strange angle made me realise how overgrown it looked. The next day I called in some contractors to fix the problems. While they worked, they taught me plenty of cool tips and tricks.

Reasons a Skylight Installation is Great for a Home

If you want to enhance your home, you might be contemplating different kinds of renovations, one of which is installing a skylight. Here are some reasons this is great for a home.

Open Feel

An open-plan layout is favoured in many houses as it creates a sense of expansiveness. These designs don't feature too many walls, which can give a crowded feeling. However, even if your house doesn't have an open-plan layout, you can achieve an open feel by building skylights. If you can look up and see the sky, a room will naturally feel larger and breezier. A skylight breaks up the heaviness of ceilings. Your house will also seem more expansive, as it will be brighter. You can choose from different types of glazing and diffusers to control and filter the incoming light.

More Convenient Than Relocating Walls

Even though skylights transform a home, installing them is typically more convenient than pulling down walls and relocating them. Thus, you can enhance your house without undertaking a massive renovation project. A skylight can also be more feasible than expanding external windows that may face a neighbour's home or the street. In any case, some areas, such as a hallway, lack a wall against which to install a window.

Privacy Protected

A skylight will often protect your privacy because it faces upwards. Of course, this depends on whether or not you live next to a high-rise building. In many cases, a skylight is a perfect solution to bring in light. You could fit one in the bathroom, making it appear bigger. If you have compact areas like a powder room or a closet, you could build a sun tunnel instead of a standard skylight.

A sun tunnel consists of a roof dome that catches the light. The light then moves through a reflective tube to the ceiling and into your room. These sun tunnel openings are less obtrusive and smaller in size, so they don't overwhelm a small space with design or let in too much light.

Ventilation

A well-ventilated home will naturally eliminate excessive moisture and prevent mould and mildew buildup. To help your house in this way, you could install a ventilating skylight. Warm, humid air automatically rises and hangs around the ceiling. Once you open a skylight, this air will flow out. Because of its high placement, a skylight can do this job more effectively than a vertical window. Kitchens, bathrooms, and laundries will especially benefit from a ventilated skylight. Less mould will form on tiles once moist, warm, stagnant air filters outside. You'll have less cleaning work as a result.
